LISA WIANT | GRAPHIC DESIGNER/ILLUSTRATOR

OODLES OF UNICORN Sketches, 128K of RAM, & one pesky brother

As a child, I spent most of my free time sketching awkward characters of my deserving brother and unicorns leaping over rainbows — most of which eventually ended up showcased on my mother’s refrigerator. When I was twelve, my father bought my first Macintosh computer equipped with 128K of RAM, a new tool called the mouse, and MacPaint software. After years of proud bit-mapped printout caricatures of my brother and oodles of unicorn sketches, I decided to take things to the next level.

  • Although I have yet to be commissioned to illustrate a majestic unicorn leaping over a vibrant rainbow, I still love what I do!

Years of study later (while discovering my unicorns were not ‘all that’), I graduated from San Diego State University, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in Graphic Design.

I began my career as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator working for Authentic Images, creating collectible products for star athletes such as Michael Jordan, Mickey Mantle, current MLB players, along with the most popular characters from Disney, Star Wars, Warner Bros., and many others.

After developing a solid understanding of the print process, I moved on to work for KFMB Stations as a Senior Designer. At KFMB I gained substantial knowledge of website design, working directly with clients and collaborating among team members. There I realized how much I really enjoyed both the project and the process.

I then took a leap of faith to pursue full-time my freelance business. The decision could not have been a better fit for my family and me.

Today, I continue to grow my skills with every project alongside the rapid advances of one of my favorite mediums, the Mac, and the popular iPhone, iPad, and...what else may follow the “i” in years to come.

It has been many exciting years as a professional Graphic Designer. Being raised from sketch pad first to mouse pad last has kept me focused on traditional approaches to my design. And although I have yet to be hired to draw a majestic unicorn leaping over a rainbow, I still love what I do.
